The Republican Newspaper has chosen high school all-star teams since 1919, beginning with "All-City" teams. All-Western Massachusetts teams were first published in 1933, and Fall 2007 marks the 19th publication of All-scholastic and All-Academic teams. The Republican All-Scholastic teams, published after the end of each season, recognize outstanding acheivement in each sport. Players were chosen by staff writers after season-long observations and input from coaches.
First Team Selections
CAROLINE BOYD, Minnechaug - Senior middle hitter was one of the integral parts of the Falcons' success this season; nine kills in crucial late-season win over Westfield; first selection to All-Scholastic volleyball, but has made it several times as member of Minnechaug indoor and outdoor track teams.
LAURA CARAKER, Amherst - Senior outside-rightside hitter was most improved player and offensive player of the year for the Hurricanes; four-year Junior Olympic player; had best match in Senior Night win over East Longmeadow; four-year member of honor roll; hopes to play volleyball in college.
ANDREA DAVIS, Longmeadow - Senior outside hitter captained the Lancers to a second straight Western Massachusetts Division II championship and repeated as the team's offensive player of the year; recorded 260 kills and 256 digs this season, including 26 kills in a crucial win over Amherst on Senior Night; has been a member of the Western Mass. Elite Junior Olympic team for the past three seasons; 2008 Bay State Games silver medalist.
BRITTANY DUSSAULT, Chicopee Comp - Middle hitter capped a stellar career with 253 kills, 158 aces and 73 blocks as a senior; three-time team MVP, two-year captain and repeat first-team selection; honor roll student; two-year varsity softball captain.
JULIA McWILLIAMS, Minnechaug - ýSenior outside hitter had a breakout season in leading the Falcons to a 12-6 record and a Western Massachusetts Division II tournament berth; had 10 kills in quarterfinal loss to Amherst and eight kills in a 3-0 regular-season victory over Amherst; also plays basketball.
HEATHER MEARS, Amherst - Senior setter led Hurricanes in assists for the second straight season; team MVP; also voted team MVP of Spalding Showcase of Champions; came up big in Senior Night win over East Longmeadow; Western Mass. Elite 18 Junior Olympic player; repeat first-teamer; honor roll; hopes to play college volleyball.
JENNIFER MEARS, Amherst - Senior outside hitter led Hurricanes in digs, aces and kills; sister of All-Scholastic first teammate Heather; co-captain was named team's defensive player of the year; successful on 98 percent of serves; 20 digs in victory over East Longmeadow; two-year member of Western Mass. Elite 18 Junior Olympics; honor roll; hopes to play college volleyball.
CHRISTINA MENTOR, Longmeadow - Senior middle blocker holds Lancers' single-game block record; successful on 92.4 percent of her serves and led team in serve receptions per game; tri-captain and four-year varsity player; NHS member; first-team pick in skiing; hopes to attend UMass.
JESSIE SCHNEPP, East Longmeadow - Senior outside hitter was one of the most exciting players to watch in the area; led team with 94 aces, 331 kills and 215 digs as Spartans earned top seed in Division II tournament and reached sectional final; 34 kills against Turners Falls; nine aces and 21 digs against Amherst; first-team All-Scholastic in track; headed to University of New Hampshire on a volleyball scholarship.
REGINA SIBILIA, Agawam - Senior setter led the Brownies offense with her passing and serving; aced 10 serves in a row in match against West Side; team captain; all-league; three-year Junior Olympic player and 2008 Bay State Games silver medalist; NHS secretary accepted at WNEC and Newbury; also applied to Syracuse, Quinnipiac and Endicott; youth lacrosse instructor.
NATALIE ZUCKER, Longmeadow - Senior setter-opposite hitter had 466 assists, 291 digs and 69 aces for Western Massachusetts Division II champions; two-time team MVP; crucial to Lancers' comeback win over East Longmeadow; 2008 Bay State Games silver medalist. and three year setter for Western Mass. Junior Olympic Elite team; NHS member hopes to major in engineering.
